FINE!

#Fine

/fīn/ adverb so-so; adequate; satisfactory

Have you ever had this conversation:

"Hi my friend. How are you? How's work going?"
"I'm alright. Work is fine. And you?"

What do you feel when reading the word "fine" in the response above? How do you feel when you tell someone you are "fine"? Do you mean, "I feel as excellent as a beautiful expensive FINE bottle of wine"? Or do you mean, "I feel fine, okay, so-so, borderline crappy and just getting by"?

Think about your current job, career, or business. Evaluate your level of Fulfillment now on a scale of 1 to 10 - where 10 equals ultimate Fulfillment and 1 equals shear misery. Write that number down in your journal.

This most dangerous score is a mediocre score between 4 and 6 because that means you are in the "FINE zone". That means you are not uncomfortable enough to make a change, like when you absolutely hate what you're doing, or are just surviving, willing to do anything it takes to make a change. Instead, you are making ends meet, you have some sort of stability and are willing to just "suck it up" and get by. Maybe even blaming others for why you aren't making more money, or why your boss won't recognize you, or why you just can't get your business off the ground and it's always a struggle to just stay above water.

Can you start to agree that Fine is NOT really okay? That it is truly a 4-letter F-word. Many many years ago, someone told me that FINE is an acronym meaning:

  • F*cked up
  • Insecure
  • Neurotic
  • Emotional

I don't know about you, but to me that is definitely NOT a finely aged bottle of wine. That is more like a bottle that was opened a few months ago that has turned into bitter, smelly, and undrinkable vinegar.

So the question now is, has FINE become good enough for you? Yes or No.

If the answer is no, the great news is you don't have to immediately run out and quit your job, or change careers, or shut down your business. Those are all viable options - and ones you may want to consider as you move forward. To create a new plan, goals, and vision.

However, WARNING!!

I also know, that "wherever you go, there you are." Meaning, if you do all of the awesome logistical changes and find your "perfect dream job", you will end up in the same place as you are now...

UNLESS....

You start changing your thinking. Right NOW.  Use the Reflective Questions below to start that shift NOW!  Pull out your journal if you haven't already and start writing!

Reflective Questions:

  • What opportunity do you have to learn a new skill or enhance a current skill during your day to day activities at your job, career, or business?
  • How do you seek to serve others through your daily activities in your job, career, or business? (This can be with clients, your employer, your team mates or co-workers.)
  • When was the last time you woke up with and expressed deep, heartfelt gratitude for your job, career, or business?
  • How can you create a practice of gratitude daily?
